Gidon Kremer


Gidon Kremer (Latvian: Gidons Kremers) (Riga, 27 February 1947) is a Latvian violinist and conductor.

Born in Latvia to parents of German origin, Jews, began studying violin with his father and grandfather (both professional violinists) to 4 years and then continued at the Conservatory in Riga, then to study with David Oistrakh at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory Moscow. In 1967 he won third prize at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium in Brussels, 1969 the first prize in the Paganini Competition in Genoa and in 1970 the first prize in the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow.

Kremer's first concert in the West takes place in 1975 in Germany, followed by participation at the Salzburg Festival in 1976 and a tour in New York in 1977. In 1981, Kremer creates a festival of chamber music in Lockenhaus, Austria, based on a non-conventional programming of works, from 1992, the festival is known as Kremerata Musica. In 1996, Kremer founded the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra, composed of young musicians from Baltic countries. He serves as artistic director of the festival Art Projekt 92 of Monaco and the summer festival in Gstaad (Switzerland).

Gidon Kremer is one of the greatest violinists who lived at the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first century. The originality, technical and interpretive depth of his performances have made him one of the brightest personalities of classical music. Kremer is known for its vast repertoire ranging from Bach to Vivaldi, or to major contemporary artists. Reference are his performances of composers like Astor Piazzolla, Philip Glass, Alfred Schnittke, Lera Auerbach, Arvo Pärt, Roberto Carnevale and John Adams. Among the composers who dedicated works, one can cite Sofia Gubaidulina (Offertorium) and Luigi Nono (The distance nostalgic utopian future). He has performed, among others, with Martha Argerich, Krystian Zimerman, Mischa Maisky, Keith Jarrett, Yo-Yo Ma, Kim Kashkashian, Valery Afanassiev, Oleg Maisenberg, Vadim Sakharov. His performances with major orchestras in the world and the greatest conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Herbert von Karajan, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Seiji Ozawa are among the most striking moments of the music of the last 30 years. In 2008 he performed with the duo in the show Igudesman and Joo A Little Nightmare Music, a show based on an unorthodox use of piano and violin, showing a remarkable sense of 'humor. His extensive discography is mainly due to the Deutsche Grammophon label, which accounts for since 1978, but has recorded for Philips and Decca.
